Diabetes mellitus (DM) commonly referred to as diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period of time. Diabetes is an ailment that is very common around the world, Nigeria inclusive. About 50% of the Nigeria population suffers from diabetes either aware or not in hospital and at home.     

First of all, I believe what causes diabetes is ignorance, most people believe that the only way diabetes can be acquired is through the intake of raw sugar but actually diabetes develops when the body doesn’t make enough insulin or is not able to use insulin effectively or it is when the glucose in the blood is in an excess amount.

There are different types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes- is also known as Juvenile diabetes. This is absence of insulin secretion, one is with a deficient pancreas and is unable to perform the functions of insulin production, and this means the individual lives on synthetic insulin for glucose regulation for life.

Type 2 diabetes- is known as mellitus. This is a situation where there is little/inability to produce or rather make use of insulin. This is common in young adults or elderly people and in most cases is hereditary.

Predisposing factors includes; hereditary, diet, smoking/alcoholism, age, sedentary lifestyle, Underline condition e.g. Hypertension, Pregnancy (gestation diabetes), Obesity, diseases of the pancreases

Signs and symptoms are; weakness, loss of skin turgor, weight gain or loss, increase thirst, increased hunger, High level urination.

Management of Diabetes; diabetes can be managed through the following measures; Diet modification, moderate exercise, rest and medication as prescribed by the doctor.
